Chapter 5: Home Dialysis

Abstract

Home dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that lets you dialyze at home with many potential benefits, including flexible treatment, a less restrictive diet and improved health outcomes. The two main types of home dialysis are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis with about 3% and 12 %, respectively in the United States. Home Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a needle-free treatment that you can perform at home during the day or even at night while you sleep.

Potential benefits of home peritoneal dialysis include:

  1. Functions more like natural kidneys;
  2. Supports preservation of remaining kidney function, leading to better clinical outcomes;
  3. Better transplant success rate;
  4. Improved blood pressure control.

Those with the highest SDI were less likely to start or be on PD as incident or prevalent patients. A small, similar percentage of incident patients in each SDI group started on home HD. Among prevalent patients, those with the highest SDI were about half as likely to be on home HD as those with the lowest SDI. Rural patients are more likely to start and be on PD or home HD.
