Every hemodialysis access is entitled to one thrill, and that occurs just past the anastomosis in the segment called Swing Vein. Any thrill felt elsewhere in the fistula circuit represents turbulent flow, which means increased blood flow velocity, from a (relative) stenosis. Whether a stenosis is “significant” and needs treatment is determined from examination of several factors. Aberrant Thrills should be considered pathological until proven otherwise.
